How Much Does Facebook Owe You?
Experimenting with new forms of negotiation for digital labour
You work for social media: you are their source of revenue. The more individuals are pigeonholed as passive “users,” the more these platforms gain in value, influence, and power.
This initiative, titled Quanti Soldi ti deve Facebook? in Italian, seeks to calculate the real economic and financial value extracted from our everyday attention, interactions, and content production on social media platforms. By analyzing platform advertising revenues, daily time spent, and usage sessions, we aim to transform our passive role as ‘users’ into a coordinated force demanding a collective return of the wealth generated by our digital labor.
Although NINA plans to scale this digital-labor credit claim across the entire European Union, our initial workshop runs, platform data collections, and calculators have been trialed exclusively in Milan and Rome.
